Alexander Heaney

Alexander Heaney was born on Sunday, 4 May 1884, at 2.30pm at 6 Richie Street, Glasgow.  His mother registered his birth on 31 May 1884, signing with her mark.  The family is recorded as living at Thimble Street, Renton, Dumbarton.

Alexander married Rose Ann Crown on 17 April 1914 at the Roman Catholic Church in Burnbank, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. The officiating priest was Father Daniel Colvin.  Rose Ann was aged 27, the daughter of Michael Crown and Helen Crown (nee Sweeney).  The witnesses were James and Ellen O’Rourke.  The Registrar was James Frame.

Roseann was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.  Her father, Michael, was born in Old Monkland (Cambuslang) on 9 June 1857, the son of James and Honora Crown (nee Murray) who were both born in Ireland. Roseann’s mother, Helen, was born in Old Monkland, on 19 August 1855, the daughter of John Sweeney and Helen Sweeney (nee Ford).  Michael and Helen married on 28 June 1875 in Old Monkland.  Helen Crown died in Hamilton, in 1929, aged 71.  Michael died in Hamilton, in 1932, aged 74.

Alexander and Rose Ann had five children:

- (1) Mary Ann Heaney (named after Alexander's late mother) was born 1st of December  1916 at 76 Donaldson Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. She died 16 months later on the 17th April 1918 from Hooping Cough at the same address.

- (2) Helen Heaney was born at 3am on 1 March 1915 at 77 Windsor Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire.  Her father registered the birth on 12 March 1915.  The Registrar was Gavin Frame. Helen married John McGowan in Hamilton in 1941 at St Cuthberts Church, Burnbank.  John was born in Hamilton on the 10th August 1914. John died of Pneumonia at Belvidere Hospital Glasgow on the 19th November 1984, aged 70.  Helen died in Hamilton on the 5th of August 2000, aged 85. Helen was the bridesmaid at her cousin, Rose Strachan’s marriage to Barney Cox at St Anne’s RC Church, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, on 31 December 1936.  She was Godmother of their first child, Mary Strachan Cox, born on 29 March 1937.

Helen & John had 4 children:

  - John McGowan. Born 19th April 1947 at 13 Milton Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. As a young man he had a strong interest in politics & lived at a flat in Quarry Street, Hamilton. He met his partner Linda and they now live in Law Village.

  - Alexander McGowan. Born 16th April 1948 at Royal Maternity Hospital, Rottonrow, Glasgow.  A member of the Royal Air Force, he married Elizabeth Ann McGlone in Forres in 1973 and they had 1 son Paul McGowan born in 1973.

  - James McGowan. Born 15th October 1949. at Bellshill Maternity Hospital. He married Elizabeth Campbell and they had 2 children Lisa McGowan, born 1978, who married James Straiton (since divorced) and James McGowan, born 1984 who married Shari Mongalingum.

-Rose Ann McGowan. Born 30th March 1952. She married Robert (Roy) Gavin at St Peter's RC Church in Hamiltonin 1970. They live in Hamilton, Scotland and have 2 children :

-Derek Gavin. Born 1971 his partner Claire Anderson – They have two daughters Nieve & Aila Louise Gavin

-Lesley Ann Gavin. Born 4th May 1974. She married Kevin McLaren. They have four children Missy Rose, Josef (Joe), Poppy and Leo.

- (3)Annie Heaney was born in Hamilton in 1919.  When she was born her mother wanted to call her Honor Ann and sent her father, Alexander Heaney to register the birth. He didn't like the name much so when he returned home he announced that he had called the child Annie!  Annie married Edward Monaghan in Hamilton in 1950.  Edward was born in Hamilton in 1918. Annie died in Hamilton in 1973 aged 54. Edward died in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, in 1993 aged 75.

Four children known:

 

  - William (Liam) Monaghan.  Born 1953 in Hamilton.  Married Kathleen Rouse in Hamilton in 1979.

     They have 2 daughters Luan Monaghan who married Andrew Hill and Louise Monaghan who married Kevin Metherall

  - Alexander Heaney Monaghan.  Born 1956 in Hamilton. He married Patricia Stewart in 1981. They have 1 daughter born in 1999 – Alexandra Monaghan

  - Roseanne Monaghan.  Born 1959 in Hamilton. She married Edward Fletcher and they have 2 sons Craig Fletcher and Kyle Fletcher

- John Monaghan

 - (4) Hugh Heaney was born at 2.30pm on 12 August 1923 at 72 Donaldson Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire.  (This is the address where John Strachan and Mary Heaney married in 1911).  His father registered the birth on 24 August 1923.  The Registrar was Gavin Frame. He joined the navy and was called to war just as the conflict was ending. Hugh died of stomach cancer (like his father) in Hamilton on 6th October 2004, aged 81.

- (5)Michael Heaney was born in Hamilton in 1926. Like his brother Hugh, he was also called to war - much to his mothers distress. He moved from Scotland to London in the 1960's where he lived in a flat two streets away from  to Kings Cross Station. He was very much into his look and followed fashion closely. He travelled around Europe before package holidays were fashionable and working in large department stores in London until he retired. He then helped out in the British Museum . He died in London, England in 2000

Alexander died at 11.40am on Monday, 27 November 1950 at Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride, Lanarkshire.  Cause of death was “Cancer of Stomach 6 months”, certified by Norman Hunter Logan MB ChB.  Alexander was 66 years old.  His son, Hugh, registered the death on 28 November 1950.  Home address was 15 Livingstone Street, Burnbank, Hamilton.  The Registrar was J Gillespie.

 

Roseann died in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, in 1982, aged 95.
