 The Mulholland's of Clonfeacale, Tyrone & Armagh, Ireland 

William Mulholland was born in 1830 in Derrycrew, Loughgall, County Armagh, Ireland. The son of Samuel Mulholland. His mother's name is unknown.

​

Derrycrew was a townland of 444 acres . It is situated in the civil parish of Loughgall and the historic barony of Oneilland West.

William spent all of his young life in Derrycrew and in 1850, aged 20, he married his first wife, Isabella Dale.

The marriage wasn't an easy one but the couple would have one child before they parted company:

​

Joseph Mulholland was born 1852 in Loughgall, Armagh. He married Ann Clulow on the 8th of August 1878 at Annaghmore, Armagh, Ireland.

​

Joseph and Ann would, like so many of the Mulhollands, eventually move from Ireland to Glasgow, Scotland

​

They had three children :

​

 - William James Mulholland born the 8th of August 1879 in Tullyroan, Loughgall, Armagh, Ireland. He died at home, aged 18 months, on the 20th of April 1881 from Bronchitis - 2 Weeks. His grandmother Isabella Dale signed the death certificate.

- John Mulholland born on the 15th of November 1881 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Little is known about John. He appears on the Irish Census of 1911, aged 30,  at 82 West Street, Portadown, Armagh - Back living with his father and stepmother.

- Isabella Jane (Bella) Mulholland born 1885 in Shettleston, Lanarkshire. She's living at 211 Westmuir Street, Tollcross, Glasgow in 1891 aged 6 years old. In 1911 she's back in Ireland, aged 26 years and living at 82 West Street, Portadown, Armagh.

Ann Mulholland (nee Clulow) died on Christmas Eve 1885 at 231 Westmuir Street, Glasgow from consumption.

​

Joseph would take the children and move back to Ireland where he would meet his second wife, Ann Eliza Dunlop. They married on the 24th of April 1886 at Ardress West Parish, Loughgall. Joseph and his family would again move back to Glasgow.

They had five children:

 

- Martha Mulholland born 8th of April 1887 at 231 Westmuir Street, Glasgow.

- Ann Eliza Mulholland born the 31st of August 1888 at 211 Westmuir Street, Parkhead, Glasgow.

- Mary Mulholland born in 1891 in Glasgow.

- Joseph Mulholland born on the 3rd of November 1892 at Castle Avenue, Portadown, Armagh, Northern Ireland.

- William Mulholland born on the 19th of October 1897 in Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Joseph Mulholland died on the 3rd of September 1923 at Belvedere Hospital, Glasgow.

He had been removed from 438 Crown Street, Glasgow. A railway employee, he gave his usual residence 84 West Street, Portadown, County Armagh.

After separating from Isabella Dale, William remarried. At his wedding to Mary Quin he lists himself as a widow. Obviously untrue, Isabella was alive and well . However as previously indicated, divorce was unheard of, so some deception was required on his part. The couple married at District Civil Parish, Loughgall, Armagh, Northern Ireland on the 17th of November 1853.  Mary was born in Clonfeacle, Tyrone and Armagh, Ireland on the 31st of July 1833.

William Mulholland and Mary Quin had four known children:

​

1. Elizabeth Mulholland born in 1853 in Derrycrew, Loughgall, Armagh, Ireland. Eliza married Robert Little at the Registry Office, Armagh County, Ireland on the 8th of May 1873. They had three sons together:

​

- Richard Little born Derrycrew, Loughgall, Ireland on the 12th of February 1874.

He died as an infant.

- James Little born Derrycrew, Loughgall, Ireland on the 11th of April 1875.

He also died as an infant.

- Joseph Little born Derrycrew, Loughgall, Ireland in 1876. Joseph left Ireland with his mother and his new stepfather, Joseph Duke, circa 1900. His father Robert Little had died in Ireland. In 1891 the family are living at 29 Salisbury Street, Govan, Glasgow. At the age of 20 Joseph Little married Mary Jane (Minnie) Richardson at 92 Gloucester Street, Tradeston, Glasgow on the 7th of May 1896.  Mary was the daughter of John Richardson & Sarah Richardson (nee Bond). She was born in Ireland.Although they continued to live in Glasgow Mary would return to Ireland to give birth to each of her children.

They had six children in total:

- Emily Little born 1898. In the 1901 census Emily is at House 15 in Derrycrew, Loughgall, Armagh, living with her Grandmother. By 1911 she's back with her parents at 16 Salisbury Street, Govan, Glasgow. She married Walter Laurie at Govan Parish Church, Glasgow on the 28th of March 1919.

They set up home at 4 Elder Street, Govan, Glasgow and on the 11th of August 1919 Emily gave birth to her one and only child - Mary Jane Richardson Little Laurie. In 1923 the family decided to leave Glasgow and seek their fortunes in the USA. Walter went out first on a scouting mission. He left from Liverpool onboard 'Franconia' to New York

Then on the 22nd of August 1925 Emily Left Glasgow for New York with daughter Mary, onboard the 'Columbia'. The trio appear on the 1930 US Census living in New York City. Emily made frequent return visits to Scotland. In 1931 Emily again sailed from Glasgow to New York on the 'Caledonia' with daughter Mary aged 11 and her sister Sarah Little aged 21. Walter Laurie died on the 17th of May 1941 in New York City. He was only 43 and was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York.

Mary Jane married Milburn Vernon Helms. Milburn was born in 1917 in North Platte, Nebraska, USA.They had one daughter Christine Helms born in 1943.

Mary Jane Little (nee Richardson) died on the 29th of October 1925 at Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow from colon cancer. She was 50 years old. Her usual residence is listed as 15 Harvie Street, Glasgow.

Joseph Little died on the 7th of January 1951 at 15 Harvie Street, Glasgow from pneumonia & a brain hemorrhage. He was 75 years old.

By 1890 Robert Little had died in Ireland and as previously mentioned Elizabeth Little (nee Mulholland) and her son Joseph Little moved to Glasgow. Elizabeth became involved with Joseph Duke in Ireland just prior to the move. Joseph Duke was born in Armagh, Ireland in 1861 the son of James Duke and Ellen Prescott.

There are no known photos of Joseph however we do have one of his brother William John Duke.

Joseph and Elizabeth and Joseph Jnr settled at 29 Salisbury Street, Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland. On the 17th of May 1891 Elizabeth gave birth to John Duke at home. The certificate lists Joseph Duke as the father but declares the baby illegitimate, so the couple were still not married at this stage. By 1901 the family are living at 282 Great Eastern Road, Parkhead, Glasgow. Joseph Jnr has married and left home but John is still living with his parents. Joseph Duke was completely devoted to his wife Elizabeth. He loved her more than anything in the world, so it came as a massive shock when her health started to deteriorate. She was an alcoholic. On the 14th of May 1908 Elizabeth died at 642 Great Eastern Road, Glasgow. Cause of death - Alcoholism.

Joseph Duke was devastated. He mourned his wife for just over 2 months until he could suffer the pain no longer. On the 25th of July 1908 he commited suicide. His son John, only 17 at the time and walked in to the house to find his father's body hanging from the kitchen door. He had now lost both his parents within 8 weeks of each other.

John was greatly helped with his grief by his girlfriend Grace Turnbull Moore. She lived in Rutherglen and the couple were married there at 6 Hamilton Road, Rutherglen on the 7th of July 1911. John was 20 and Grace was 21. She already had an infant daughter, Margaret Cuthbert Moore born the 30th of December 1909.

They would go on to have two son's:

​

- Robert Moore Duke born on the 11th of January 1912 at 258 King Street, Rutherglen. He married Mary Gallacher in Carlton, Glasgow in 1933​ and had three daughters:

​

- Margaret Gallacher Duke born 1933. Married Michael Bell at the Registry Office, Possilpark, Glasgow, UK in 1953.

​

- Grace Moore Duke born 1936. She married James Anthony Ahern or Pettigrew in Provan, Easterhouse, Glasgow in 1961.

​

- Robertha Moore Duke born 1939. She married twice. Firstly to William Rankin Woodhouse in Springburn, Glasgow in 1957 and secondly to Bowman Alexander Dick in 1982. 

​

- Joseph Duke born on the 29th of December 1913 at 239 Bernard Street, Glasgow. He married Dorothy Livingstone Rourke on the 10th of February 1939 at Central Church, Bridgeton, Glasgow.He was a general labourer aged 25 and she was a barbers assistant aged 19. They had been next door neighbours prior to wedding. Joseph living at 105 St James Road, Glasgow and Dorothy living at number 107. Joseph and Dorothy went to live in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.

2. John Mulholland born November 1861 in Loughgall and Tartaraghan, Armagh, Ireland.

John first married Eliza Jackson circa 1880 in Armagh, Ireland. They had one son:

​

Samuel Jackson Mulholland was born in 1880 in Armagh.  Eliza died in Ireland shorty after Samuel's birth. His father John then moved to Tradeston in Glasgow, taking Samuel with him. Samuel is living at 11 Francis Street, Govan, Tradeston, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1891. He married Agnes Jane (Jean/Jeanie) Dunlop in 1900 in the Gorbals, Glasgow. Sam was an Iron moulder/Journeyman, aged 20 and Jeanie was a hair spinner, aged 19. Her parents were Thomas Dunlop and Isabella Dunlop (nee McMillan) residing at 4 Ritchie Street, Glasgow. 

​

Sam & Jeanie Mulholland had eight children:

​

- Isabella (Bella) Mulholland was born in Tradeston, Glasgow in 1901. She died at 315 Eglington Street, Glasgow on the 7th of January 1926 aged 25 from consumption. 

​

- Samuel (Sam) Mulholland was born in Tradeston, Glasgow in 1903. He married Catherine Anderson at 11 May Terrace, Cathcart, Glasgow on the 2nd of January 1925.  They had one daughter Isabella Dunlop Mulholland born in Glasgow in 1925 who married James McEwan Frame in Provan, Easterhouse, Glasgow in 1948.  Samuel Mulholland died at Robroyston Hospital, Glasgow on the 18th of September 1941 from consumption. He was 38 years old. Catherine died in Glasgow in 1976.

- Agnes Jane (Jeanie) Mulholland born at 4 Ritchie Street, Tradeston, Glasgow on the 13th of May 1904. She never married and died aged 22 at 315 Eglington Street, Glasgow on the 4th of November 1926 from consumption.

 

- William John Mulholland was born in Glasgow in 1907. He died aged 14 from consumption at 315 Eglington Street, Glasgow on the 7th of January 1921.

​

- Thomas Mulholland was born in Glasgow in 1909. He died aged 23 at Knightswood Hospital, Glasgow on the 11th of February 1932. His usual residence was 315 Eglington Street, Glasgow. He was an unmarried sawmill labourer. Cause of death - consumption.

​

- James Mulholland was born in Glasgow in 1913. He married Harriet Kane at Renwick Church, Cumberland Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on the 23rd of February 1934. They had three children :

​

- Thomas Mulholland born 1935

- Mary Kane Dunlop Mulholland born 1937. She married Alexander Martin Murphy in 1956.

- Alexander Mulholland born 1944

​

- Alexander Dunlop Mulholland born Glasgow in 1916. He married Elizabeth Frazer Moffat at the Barony North Church, Glasgow on the 16th of April 1940. They had 1 son born in 1942 - William Morgan Mulholland.

- Joseph Mulholland born in Glasgow in 1918. He married Catherine Halliday at the Barony North Church, Glasgow on the 27th of September 1940.  They had one son, Joseph Mulholland born 1942

3. Mary Ann Mulholland born in 1861 in Loughgall and Tartaraghan, Armagh, Ireland. She married Hugh Heaney on the 23rd of October 1885 at Registry Office, 92 Gloucester Street, Tradeston, Glasgow. For more on Mary Ann's story click HERE

4. Samuel Mulholland born in 1862. Armagh, Ireland. Live so many of the Mulhollands, Samuel moved to Glasgow. He's aged 29 in the 1891 Census living at 11 Francis Street, Govan, Tradeston, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He's boarding with his brother and his sister in law and their children. He married Elizabeth Wright (nee Hadden) on the 2nd of August 1895 at Tradeston, Glasgow.

Elizabeth was first married to William Wright in Loughgall, Armagh, Ireland. They had moved from Ireland to Glasgow, Scotland and had 5 children:

​

- James Wright born on the 26th of February 1881 at 6 Ritchie Street, Glasgow

​

- John Wright born on the 2nd of May 1883 at 11 Francis Street, Tradeston, Glasgow. He married Helen Muir at The Liberal Rooms, Commercial Road, Hutchinsontown, Govan, Glasgow on the 17th of July 1903. 

​

Their children:

​

- Janet Muir Wright born on the 25th of February 1908 at 100 Florence Street, Hutchinsontown, Govan, Glasgow

- John Wright born in 1911

- William Wright born on the 23rd of January 1914 at 11 Oatlands Square, Glasgow.

- Helen Muir Wright born on the 12th of March 1916 at 19 Elm Street, Hutchinsontown, Govan, Glasgow

- Eliza Wright born on the 31st of August 1887 at 3 Francis Street, Tradeston, Glasgow

​

- William Wright born on the 2nd of March 1889 at 3 Francis Street, Tradeston, Glasgow. He died aged 16 at  154 Eglington Street, Glasgow from Tuberculosis. He was a Fish Mongers Van Boy.

​

- Thomas Wright born on the 19th of January 1891 at 3 Francis Street, Tradeston. He first married Catherine Somerville Dick at Eglington Street Congregational Union Church, Glasgow on the 10th of April 1914. 

​

They had two children:

​

- Eliza Hadden Wright born on the 2nd of February 1915. She died on the 17th of October 1929, aged 14 years from Tuberculosis

- Agnes McKenzie Wright born in 1916.

​

Catherine Somerville Wright (nee Dick) died aged 28 from Anemia - an iron deficiency at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow on the 24th of April 1923. Thomas remarried Everina Burns Wilson McFarlane, a widow, at 8 Brunswick Street, Glasgow on the 30th of April 1927. They settled at 66 Nelson Street, Baillieston, Glasgow. Thomas died on the 4th of March 1936 aged 45 at the Southern General Hospital, 1301 Govan Road, Glasgow. He suffered cardiac failure while under aesthetic, about to undergo surgery for gangrene of the leg.

​

William Wright died on the 22nd of January 1893 at Govan Lunatic Asylum - He's described on his death certificate as a pauper lunatic. Another victim of paralysis of the insane.

​

In 1895 - Two years after her first husband's death Elizabeth married Samuel Mulholland. She was 39 years old and he was 33 years old. By 1901 they were living at 14 Eglinton Street, Kingspark, Glasgow. They spent over 20 years living in the Southside of Glasgow.

​

Samuel died on the 5th of June 1915 at Shieldhall Infectious Diseases Hospital, Glasgow from pneumonia, cardiac failure, erysipelas. His usual residence is listed as 77 Florence Street, South Side, Glasgow.

​

Elizabeth died on the 19th of  April 1918 from a brain hemorrhage at Govan Poor House, 167 Renfrew Road, Govan, Glasgow.
