Peter, like his father, James, and step-father, Robert Martin, was a Shoemaker Journeyman.  His address when he married in 1862 was 16 Church Street, Hamilton, which was the home and work premises of his stepfather and his mother.  All the children of Peter and Jean Strachan were born there.

Jane (Jean) Waterson was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.  Her birth date is unknown but likely 1840.  She is recorded as 23 when she married Peter Strachan in 1862.  Jean had one sister, Helen, and two brothers, William and John.  This is recorded on the 1851 Census of 15 Lamb Street, Hamilton - William is aged 9 and John aged 4 and Helen is aged 7.  Their mother, Catherine, is recorded as married.

The two brothers are not recorded in the 1861 Census of 86 Townhead Street, Hamilton, as living there, but Jean and ‘Mary’ are recorded as living there with their mother, Catherine, a widow, and grandfather, John Haddow.  Jean is recorded as aged 21 and Helen (recorded as Mary) as aged 16, both were single and employed as Tambourers as was their mother.
