Mary Lucan Martin & John Lees
Mary Lucan Martin was born on the 12th of June 1829 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Her father Robert Martin remarried when she was five years old.
There's still an air of mystery about her parents situation. Divorce was uncommon at the time and there is no death listed for her mother Elizabeth Martin (nee Wright) however it wasn't uncommon then not to register deaths either. In any case by 1835 Robert was married to Margaret Strachan (Nee Harris) and they were all living together as one family unit in New Wynd, Hamilton.

Mary was 20 years old and 6 months pregnant when she married John Lees on the 26th of April 1850 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. John was a coal miner originally from Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. His parents were David Lees and Jane Lees (nee Cowan)

Mary and John had ten children:
1. David Lees born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire in July 1850. David was a coal miner, like his father. At the age of 19 he started courting a local girl, Mary Hawthorn and the following year she fell pregnant. The child was born in 1871 and later that same year on the 27th of October they were married at Watsonville, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mary was the daughter of James Hawthorn and Jane McEwan. She had a dislike of coal mines as her father had died in an accident at Jerviston Colliery Pit on the 29th of July 1863 when he was just 37 years old. David and Mary lived in Hamilton, Lanarkshire after their marriage. They had five children. On the 1881 census they were living at 35, Gladstone Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Tragedy struck the family the following year when David was working at the Greenfield Pit, Hamilton. On the 1st of February 1882 there was an accident and David was killed by falling stone in the mine. Mary remarried in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 22nd of September 1885. This union was destined to be a short one however, as Mary herself died at 12 Gladstone Street, Burnbank, Hamilton on the 3rd of September 1888 from chronic bronchitis. She was 37 years old.

- John Lees was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire on the 24th of January 1871. In 1891 he's listed at Ann Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, living with his grandparents after his parents deaths. He never married and lived to be 81 years old. He died on the 7th of September 1952 at Cleland Country Hospital from heart failure.

- Jeanie Lees was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 24th of June 1872. She died aged 22 months at Watsonville, Motherwell, Lanarkshire on the 26th of April 1874.

- Robert Lees was born in Hamilton , Lanarkshire on the 12th of April 1874. (His sister Jeanie died a fortnight later)
In 1891 he's listed at Ann Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, living with his grandparents after his parents deaths. On the 28th of February 1893 he married Jane Manners Crawford in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He was 18 years old and she was 21 years old. They had seven children:

1. David Lees was born at 75 Portland Place, Hamilton on the 11th of November 1893. He married Mary Veitch Laird at the Co-Op Hall, Hamilton on the 18th of July 1919. Like his father and his grandfather David was a coal miner. They had six children in total, some born in Hamilton, Scotland and some born in Pennsylvania, USA. They immigrated to the USA in the mid 1920's and settled in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
David and Mary's children were:

- Christina McLuckie Lees was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 19th of January 1920. She moved with the family to the USA where she married Ralph D Smith at Dresden Way, Allegheny, Pennsylvania on the 22nd of May 1939. They had two children. Glenn Smith and Leanna Smith. Leanna married Frank Guszak.

- Jean (Jennie) Manners Crawford Lees was born in Hamilton, Scotland on the 1st of May 1921. She married Theodore Tanski and lived in Lawrenceville, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA. She died there on the 10th of July 1983.

- Robert Lees was born at 32 Eddlewood Rows, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 30th of December 1932. He died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the 25th of March 1974.
​
- Mary Laird Lees was born in Pennsylvania, USA on the 22nd of November 1925. She married Edward Walter Kohler in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania on the 17th of March 1945. They had two children. Daughter Bonnie Kohler was born on the 22nd of April 1946 and son Edward David Kohler was born the 23rd of February 1955. Edward married Beatrice (Bea) and they had 3 sons and 1 daughter - Ben, John, Matt and Lauren.
Edward Walter Kohler died age 50 on the 29th of November 1973. Mary Laird Kohler (nee Lees) died at Allegheny, Pennsylvania on the 2nd of March 1993. Their son Edward David Kohler died aged 51 on the 23rd of May 2006.
- Jessie Lees was born in Pennsylvania, USA on the 19th of June 1927.

2. Margaret Allan (Maggie) Lees was born at 122 Low Waters, Hamilton on the 7th of August 1895. She died aged 14 at 64 Eddlewood Row, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 22nd of June 1910 from vascular disease of the heart.
3. Mary Hawthorn Lees was born at 20 Moore Street, Cadzow, Hamilton on the 2nd of July 1897. She never married and died aged 62 at 29/2 Magdalene Drive, Portobello, Edinburgh on the 11th of December 1959.

4. James Crawford Lees was born at 20 Moore Street, Cadzow, Hamilton on the 2nd of June 1901. He married Winifred Edith Hinton at 19 Howard Street, Glasgow on the 24th of March 1924. Winifred was the daughter of Louis Edwin Hinton and Ada Coulthurst born in Kilbarchan on the 2nd of July 1901. Her parents lived in Glasgow.
James and Winifred had 2 sons:

- Frederick Austin Lees born Milton, Glasgow in 1930. He married Catherine Smylie in Milton, Glasgow in 1959.
- Simpson Lees born Milton, Glasgow in 1930. He died in Glasgow in 2016

5. John Lees was born at 44 Chapel Street, Hamilton on the 13th of December 1902. He married Lucy Katherine Rodgers in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1932. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force during WW2, serving from April 1943 - July 1945. He ranked as a leading aircraftman. Service number 83174. At the time he was living at 361 Suburban Road, South Perth, Fremantle, Western Australia - His normal occupation was a Tram Conductor. No known children.

6. Robert Lees was born at 121 Eddlewood Rows, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 23rd of June 1904. He married Jeanie Scott Lindsay on the 31st of December 1924 at Wood Dean Manse, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. They had two children:
- Mary Hawthorn Lees born at the Maternity Hospital, Glasgow on the 4th of April 1929
- Robert Lees born at Beckford Lodge, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 20th of March 1934

7. William Crudden Lees was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 23rd of January 1910. He married Elizabeth Kinsella in Blythswood, Glasgow in 1935. He died in Redruth, Cornwall, England in December 1971.

Robert Lees died on the 10th of June 1939 aged 65 from heart failure. He was found dead in his bed at 37 Farm Road, Hamilton. His wife Jane Manners Lees (nee Crawford) died in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 4rth of January 1940

- David Lees was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 12th of June 1881. David was a coal miner. On the 1901 census he's living at 19 Greenfield Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He's 20 years old and living with his aunt and uncle James & Elizabeth Sneddon. He married Janet Anderson Dick in Glasgow City on the 2nd of October 1907 .
Janet died from sudden heart failure aged just 29 years at Cottage Hospital, Dunfermline on the 28th of June 1914.
David died at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow aged 37 on the 19th of December 1918 from chronic bronchitis. His usual address was 141 Glasgow Road, Burnbank, Hamilton.
2. Andrew Lees born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire in 1854. Andrew was a coal miner. He married Agnes Ralston at Windmillhill, Motherwell on the 23rd of July 1875. In 1891 they are living on Whitehill Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. By 1901 they are living on 82 Windsor Street, Burnbank, Hamilton. They had no children. Andrew died aged 67 at 3 Gladstone Street, Burnbank, Hamilton on the 10th of November 1921. He is buried in the Bent Cemetery, Hamilton. Agnes died at the same address on the 19th of January 1936. She was 77 years old.

3. Elizabeth Wright Lees born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire on the 4th of August 1855. She married James Allan Sneddon in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 12th of December 1873. They had one daughter:

Margaret Sneddon born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1876. She appears on most of the census' living with her parents. In 1901 she's living at 15 Canning Place, St Rollox, Glasgow​. The housekeeper of widower John Parker, a 67 year old oil merchant from Newmilns, Ayrshire.

Elizabeth Wright Sneddon (nee Lees) died aged 54 from heart failure at 38 George Street, Hamilton on the 9th of December 1909. James Allan Sneddon died on the 14th of June 1924. They are both buried in the Bent Cemetery, Hamilton.

4. Jane (Jeanie) Cowan Lees born in Carfin, Lanarkshire on the 5th of August 1857. She married William Letham Wyper in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1883. They lived at Gladstone Street, Hamilton and had six children:

- Mary Martin Wyper born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1884. She never married and died, aged 62, at 50 Auchinwaith Road, Blantyre on the 9th of February 1948.

- Morrison Letham Wyper was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 6th of April 1885. She married William Whyte in Blantyre, Lanarkshire on the 23rd of February 1912.

- Jeanie Lees Whyte born in Shettleston, Glasgow in 1921. She married James McLean Baird in Blythswood, Glasgow in 1944.

- Alexander Wyper was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 26th of April 1887. He married Agnes Smith in Govan, Glasgow in 1918. They had one son :

- William L Wyper born in 1920 and died in 1922.

- Elizabeth (Lizzie) Wyper was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 27th of September 1887. She moved to Illinois, USA.

- Agnes Wyper was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1890.

- Annie Lees Wyper was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1892. She never married and died at 50 Auchinwaith Road, Blantyre on the 13th of June 1946.
5. John Lees born in Larkhall, Lanarkshire on the 31st of July 1859. He died on the 4th of January 1938.

6. Mary Lees born in Larkhall, Lanarkshire on the 31st of July 1859. She died as a baby on the 3rd of February 1860 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

7. Annie Lees born in Larkhall, Lanarkshire on the 11th of February 1862. She married James Barclay Lindsay in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 5th of March 1881. They had five children and moved to Averyville, Peoria, Illinois, USA.

- John Lees Lindsay was born in Burnbank, Hamilton on the 27th of March 1881. He became a US citizen in 1913 then living in Lewistown, Illinois. He married Catherine Murray in Peoria, Illinois and was drafted into the US Army .
He died in Peoria, Illinois, USA on the 23rd of April 1943 aged 57.

- Adam L Lindsay was born in Burnbank, Hamilton in 1903. He married Celia Coy. They both died in Peoria, Illinois.

9. Adam Lees born in Ravenscraig, Dalziel, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, on the 28th of March 1866. He married Mary McArthur on the 28th of August 1896 at 100 Almada Street, Hamilton. He was a well respected physician & surgeon with a practice based at Park View, Burnbank, Hamilton. He died aged only 43 years old at 3 Balmoral Terrace, Glasgow on the 6th of October 1909 from acute dilatation of the stomach - a condition he had suffered with for over 10 years. His wife Mary Lees (nee McArthur) died at Melbourne Terrace, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland on the 23rd of December 1934. She was 66 years old.
Adam and Mary had four children

- John Lees was born at Glasgow Road, Hamilton on the 21st of July 1897. The family moved around a lot and in 1906 were living at the Delves, Lanark and John was attending Lanark Grammar School. In 1911 he's living with the family at Limetree Cottage, Glasgow Road, Hamilton. He followed in his fathers footsteps and became a physician & surgeon. He married Lillias Murray Halley at 449 Victoria Road, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on the 18th of June 1929. His brother Neil was a witness as was Lillias' mother Bessie.

They had one son:

Adam Robertson Lees who was born on the 11th of July 1930 at Elmbank House, Bridgend, Irvine, Ayrshire. He married Doreen Cameron Stewart in Dundee in 1954. Adam died at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee on the 6th of January 1999. Doreen died in Dundee in 2016.

- Neil McArthur Lees was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire 1900. He married Emelyn Nicolson Laing on the 12th of April 1933 at 70 Oakshaw Street, Paisley. She was from Moy, Canisbay, Caithness.
Emelyn died at City Hospital, Aberdeen on the 9th of September 1974. Neil died at 1000 Great Western Road in Glasgow's West End in 1980.

- Mary Martin McArthur Lees was born in Burnbank, Hamilton on the 3rd of December 1902. She died from heart failure at Melbourne Terrace, Saltcoats on the 29th of September 1959.

- Adam Robertson Lees was born in Park View, Burnbank on the 15th of March 1905. He married Mary Fleming at Landsborough Church, Saltcoats, Ayrshire on the 1st of September 1931.
They had one son :
Adam Robertson Lees born at 70 Oakshaw Street, Paisley on the 4th of September 1932. He married Valerie Guilia Louise McKie at St. Fillan's Church, Newport-on-Tay, Fife, Scotland on the 28th of December 1956.
